Trabzon, on Türkiye's eastern Black Sea coast, has become one of the favourite summer escapes for Saudi and Gulf families: green mountains, lakes, wooden cottages and mild weather while home is at its hottest. But it needs different planning from Istanbul. The highland sights are spread out, roads are mountainous, and the weather can change within an hour.
A note from PARELO: we are an Istanbul-based company running family programmes in Istanbul with private car with a drivers. Our Trabzon service is planned but not live yet, so this page is an independent guide written because so many families ask us about Trabzon.
Why Trabzon works for families
- Climate: summer averages roughly 20–27°C on the coast, cooler in the highlands.
- Direct flights: Saudi newspaper Sabq reported about 85 direct weekly flights from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah in summer 2026.
- Familiar environment: halal meat is the norm, mosques are everywhere, and Uzungöl has Arabic signage and menus.
- Kid-friendly nature: lake walks, meadows, horses, waterfalls and lit show caves.
When to go
| Period | Conditions | Family notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dec – Feb | Cold, snow in the highlands | Snowy Uzungöl and Zigana; some high roads close; Karaca Cave closed. |
| Mar – Apr | Changeable, wet | Quiet; higher plateaus not fully open. |
| May – mid-Jun | Mild, very green | One of the best windows, fewer crowds. |
| Mid-Jun – Aug | Warmest; afternoon fog up high | Peak Gulf season: book early, expect queues at Uzungöl. |
| Sep | Mild, quieter | Excellent if school dates allow. |
| Oct – Nov | Autumn colours, more rain | Keep an indoor back-up plan. |
Getting there and around
Direct flights run from several Saudi and Gulf cities, especially in summer; schedules and airlines change each season, so check with the airline. From Istanbul, the domestic flight takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, with several daily departures from Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen. Trabzon Airport is only about 6 km from the city centre; for Ayder, Rize-Artvin Airport is closer.
Public transport does not reach most highland sights. Families either rent a car (only if comfortable on mountain roads in fog) or hire a private driver with a family van.
Where to stay
Split your nights: Trabzon city for the first and last nights (airport, malls, hospitals, day trips to Sümela and Hıdırnebi), then two or three nights at Uzungöl so you can walk the lake before the day crowds arrive. Add a night in Ayder if you want the Rize highlands without a long return drive.
Before booking a cottage, check:
- A recent video of inside and outside, ideally a live video call.
- An exact map pin, the condition of the last stretch of road, and whether a normal car or van can climb it in rain.
- Real bedroom and bathroom count, heating, and railings on balconies and stairs.
- The tourist-rental permit number from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
- The total price in writing, deposit and cancellation terms. Avoid paying in full by transfer to an unknown individual.

Food, weather and safety
Halal food: meat in Türkiye is halal as a rule, and many family restaurants in Trabzon and Uzungöl do not serve alcohol; ask if it matters to you. Try kuymak, Akçaabat köfte, Black Sea pide and hamsi. Buy premium honey only from reputable shops with a receipt.
Rain and fog: visit plateaus early, as fog usually builds in the afternoon. Pack layers and rain jackets even in August, wear shoes with grip, and keep one flexible day.
Avoiding common problems: agree driver prices in writing (total, hours, places, fuel, overtime), confirm the exact vehicle, ask for priced menus near the lake, compare exchange rates, and keep children away from fast mountain streams. Emergency number in Türkiye: 112.
Budget: book July–August flights and stays early, consider May, June or September, stay in the city for part of the trip, and eat at local restaurants away from the waterfront.
