Alcohol-Free Restaurants in Istanbul: A Family Guide
Published 13 October 2026 · 3 min read
Most meat in Turkey is halal, but that doesn't mean a restaurant is alcohol-free. Many well-known places, especially along the Bosphorus and in Taksim and Karaköy, serve alcohol at the next table. For many Muslim families, that makes a big difference.
1. "Halal" and "alcohol-free" are not the same thing
Halal: refers to the meat and how the animal was slaughtered.
Alcohol-free (alkolsüz): the restaurant serves no alcoholic drinks anywhere in the dining room.
Ask about both. Don't stop at the word "halal".
2. How to tell if a restaurant is alcohol-free
Ask in Turkish: "Alkol servisi var mı?" means "Do you serve alcohol?" If the answer is "Yok", it means no.
Check the drinks menu: if you see bira (beer), rakı (anise spirit) or şarap (wine), the restaurant serves alcohol.
Look for the word "alkolsüz" in the restaurant's name or on its Google Maps listing.
Family-style and traditional places (lokanta canteens, kebab houses, Turkish breakfast spots) are usually alcohol-free, but always ask.
3. Watch the bill, too
Some tourist restaurants bring dishes you didn't order (starters, bread, fruit) and add them to the bill. Ask for a menu with prices before ordering, and say clearly that you only want what you ordered. We cover this in detail in How to avoid surprise restaurant bills in Istanbul.
4. Areas with a more family-friendly atmosphere
Restaurants in Fatih and Sultanahmet, near the historic mosques.
Restaurants in Eyüp Sultan overlooking the Golden Horn.
Family restaurants in Üsküdar on the Asian side.
These areas have plenty of alcohol-free options, but the rule still applies: ask before you sit down.
5. How it works with PARELO
We don't book any restaurant into our itineraries until it has confirmed to us in writing that it doesn't serve alcohol. Your driver knows these restaurants and takes you straight there, and the price is clear from the start.
