Surprise Restaurant Bills in Istanbul: What Changed in 2026
Published 11 October 2026 · 3 min read
What upsets families most in Istanbul isn't the price of the food. It's the surprise at the end of the evening: a charge nobody mentioned, or dishes you never ordered on the bill.
What changed?
In late January 2026 Turkey's Ministry of Trade amended the Price Labelling Regulation. Under the change, restaurants, cafés and pastry shops may not add mandatory charges called a "service charge", "table charge" or "cover", and starters placed on the table without your request may not be billed. The bill should only contain the prices of what you ordered. Tipping remains voluntary.
How to avoid surprises
Ask for the menu with prices before you order
If a dish you didn't order arrives, ask before you eat from it
Check the bill line by line before paying
Tipping is your choice and can never be mandatory
How we do it
At the restaurants we book for PARELO guests, no bill ever reaches the table. Guests show their booking code and we pay the restaurant directly at a price agreed in advance. With "All meals included", every daily meal is part of the package price, so you never pay at the table.
